MAT Service Delivery for Assistive Technology Practice Test

Visual contrast refers to how differences in brightness or color between a subject and its surroundings let you see where one thing ends and another begins. This separation of a figure from its background is what makes shapes, text, and icons recognizable and readable, especially at a glance. Strong contrast helps the viewer distinguish edges and details quickly, while low contrast makes things hard to see.

This is the best way to understand the concept: visual contrast is about distinguishing the figure from the background, not about recalling colors, tracking a moving object, or changing where you focus. Recalling colors is a memory task, following a moving object involves motion perception, and changing focal point deals with eye focus rather than the perceptual separation between object and background. In practice, increasing visual contrast improves accessibility by making information more perceptible for people with visual impairments.
